Jane Scott, a wealthy Quaker, lives peacefully in rural Vermont riding her horses in shows. Her serenity is shattered when she and her friend Victoria discover a murder victim. They are caught up in a mystery involving theft of horses who either have a murder contract on them by their owners to collect on insurance money, or who have been stolen to sell for meat. The trail leads to Montana where Jane teams up with a woman rancher to discover the horse thief.
