Harry Jordan is a detective in Boston, working on a case of a serial rapist/murderer. In an effort to find the crook, he asks high-profile TV journalist Mallory Malone, to feature his story and photo identity of the killer on her show. She refuses but a romance is struck up between the two.

For Mallory, the picture unnerves her as the man is so familiar, so like a man she used to know in her terrible past. She grew up with an abusive father and her mother took Mallory away to a small country town where they were treated as outsiders.
Mallory's mother slipped in a depression and then maybe even insanity as Mallory worked just to supplement their meagre welfare.
Harry is a wealthy man, having two wealthy families in his past. He became a lawyer and then a policeman. His wife wanted to be married to a lawyer, not a policeman, so she left him.
Mallory learns to open up to Harry about her past in an attempt to capture the murderer.
