Lorn hones his Chaos Talent and learns to be a good commander in the White Lancers, finding out what works and what doesn't. With his Consort, Ryalth, he struggles to discover what he's meant for, and the two found a Trading House, placing Lorn in the position of being White Mage, Lancer, and Trader, which he eventually uses to become a leader of Cyador. Lorn grows a lot in the two books, and learns to be a better man than the people who try to kill him and take his power for themselves. I enjoyed this book because Lorn's struggle was a powerful moving force that showed that white and black aren't always a specific color, sometimes it's grey

This a book of the Magic of Recluce series, but there is no mention of Recluce in it. It is about a man named Lorn, who is a military officer, mage, and healer, who is consorted to the first successful woman trader. While Lorn tries to do his duty, he is always stepping on toes. This causes him to have people trying to kill him. While he goes from one assignment to another, he always seems to succeed, and becomes a hero. His last assignment is in the Capitol, and is his greatest challange. He might not succeed, or live, and if he does, he might become Emperor.
