Victoria Bliss, a scholar with the measurements of a Playboy bunny, receives a mysterious invitation from her erstwhile lover (and sometime criminal adversary) "Sir John Smythe" to meet him in Sweden. Upon her arrival she discovers that he had hoped to involve her in a scam: she was to pose as a distant cousin to a wealthy Swede with treasure buried in his backyard (which happens to be on an island in the middle of a lake).

Unfortunately for them both, another set of criminals has also gotten word of the treasure, and descends on the island. Vicky must work not only to escape with her own life, but also to save her kindly "cousin" -- all while dealing with her complicated feelings for a very complicated man.
Vicky Bliss recognizes the rose, the cryptic message, and the ticket to Stockholm from her lover, art thief John Smythe. So, naturally she takes off as soon as possible. What she falls into is a confused search for a missing horde and trouble with a ruthless gang of criminals who want it more than she does--and who want to punish John as well. Even stranded on an island with these men, a man she met in Stockholm and isn't sure she can trust, and a drug-addicted archaeologist, Vicky's curious nature can't be dampened. She not only does her best to shield her lover, but she works to rescue the old man who lives on the island as well as locate the treasure before the story's unlikely villain does.
