Erin and her mother, a labor-and-delivery nurse, find themselves taking care of Meghan's children as she tries to go straight. Erin had been poised to leave Butte and attend art school, but Meghan's return, the children's needs, and Erin's budding romance with a geologist, who is in town to study toxicity at the local open-pit mine, cause her to put her plans on hold.
