    Jared, Viscount Ravenswood, has been charged to see his housekeeper's, and best friend's, daughter to the Duchess of Clairbourne after she dies. Jared, who had rescued his housekeeper, Mary, from the Duke of Clairbourne after he violated and impregnated her, did not trust the Duchess, thinking she did nothing to help help Mary's situation. Jared decides to visit his sister, who is the widowed Duchess' neighbor to find out her character before relinquishing the child he has grown to love to her.

    Calantha, the Duchess of Clairbourne, is now a widow and happy about it. For the two years she was married her husband emotionally and physically abused her, causing her to push away all her friends in fear that he would hurt them too. When Calantha meets Jared, she intrigued by him because he is such a large man, although the ton has dubbed him "Lord Beast" due to his size, demeanor, and the scars he bears on his face from rescuing his younger sister.
   As Jared makes friends with Calantha, he realizes she is also a victim of the dead Duke's abusive nature. The two feel a powerful attraction for each other, and the couple decide to wed for the sake of the child. As soon as the couple wed, the child they adopted his threatened by an almost kidnapping and attempt at poisoning and the villian has set up Calantha to look like the culprit. Jared soon realizes that Calantha is in danger as much as their adopted child and together the couple captures the mysterious villian. The pair find their way to trust and happiness, washing away the mistrust and abuse that has marred both of their pasts.
