However, later discovering that Alexander is her sister, Dasha's lover she blocks out her emotions for him but is uncontrollably drawn to him . At the same time Alexander's love for Tatiana grows stronger but is separated after he is notified by his captain that hitler and his troops are attacking Russia and he must fight off the enemy.

With Leningrad surrounded by hitler's soldiers, one by one Tatiana's family members start to die away due to the lack of rations. But at the same time Dasha discovers Tatiana and Alexander's love affair, which could threaten to tear the family apart.

However, although Tatiana and Alexander's love is strong, the challenges that face before them are too much. Tatiana's sister, Dasha, the War and Alexander's dangerous secret, a secret so destructive it measures as much as the war itself may cause them to separate.

Tatiana Metanova is a 17-year-old girl sharing a communal apartment with her family when Germany declares war on the Soviet Union in 1941. It is on this summer's day that she meets Alexander, a dashing lieutenant in the Red Army, when he spots her eating an icecream on a bench. Their eyes meet, and it is love at first sight.

However, Alexander and Tatiana's love must overcome many obstacles, including Tatiana's much beloved sister, Dasha, Alexander's best friend, Dimitri, and the siege of Leningrad.

As the Germans block all access to the city of Leningrad, food becomes scarce and it is a struggle to survive the harsh winter for Tatiana and her family. But with Alexander's love, Tatiana somehow manages to keep going, despite the famine and death all around her.

This book is set in communist Russia throughout the blockade of Leningrad in the 1940's (WW2). It is about a young girl, Tatiana, her family and her lover, Alexander. This novel involves a great deal of history and romance. It is emotional, though provoking and has a storyline so great, it keeps you up until the early hours of the morning reading it!
