The Day of The Jackal Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Day of The Jackal

French President Charles de Gaulle handed over Algeria to Algerian nationalists after years of the French fighting and losing their lives. Due to his disgraceful decision, a French terrorist group called the OAS formed to assassinate de Gaulle. After an attempt on his life where several members of the OAS hid along a street, shooting at the President's bullet-proof vehicle, failed, the three top men of the organization hired a professional assassin. Code-named the Jackal, or Chacal in French, the book describes his extensive planning on the attempted killing of de Gaulle. Between the time the Jackal starts his planning and up to the actual day of the planned assassination, a French investigator is hot on his tail. Every inch of turf that the Jackal covers, the investigator, Claude Lebel, goes over just moments behind.
