The End of the Affair Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The End of the Affair

Maurice Bendrix is a middle-aged bachelor who meets Sarah and Henry Miles while he is beginning to write a new book. He decides to find out what Henry's life is like because his main character, like Henry, is a civil servant in the British government. He quickly begins an affair with Sarah, which lasts for several years. One day, they survive a bombing during WWII, and when she discovers that he is alive, she tells him that the affair is over. Two years pass, and Maurice runs into Henry on the street. Henry, who knows nothing about the affair, invites Maurice for a drink and tells him that he's worried that Sarah might be having an affair with someone. The thought of her having an affair with another man upsets Maurice, and he hires a private investigator to discover why Sarah left Maurice.
