Outlawed and desperate, Craer Delnbone and Hawkril Anharu, once warriors for the Baron Blackgult who was also known as the Golden Griffin, have taken the greatest of risks to survive. Craer the thief convinces his veteran warrior friend to help him steal one of the expensive gowns of the legendary Lady of Jewels, daughter of Blackgult's archrival. However, they end up rescuing the imprisoned Lady of Jewels instead, taking the lovely Embra Silvertree with them when they escape her father the Baron's wrath.

As a mage, she manages to get them to a safe place, where they are nearly eaten by one of Craer's old friends, a hiding healer by the name of Sarasper Codelmer who can shift shapes as well. Together, they form the Band of Four and embark on a quest for four powerful legendary stones with unlimited powers, only to find that every other person wants them, too. With that weighing on them and Baron Silvertree working against, it looks to be a daunting task.
