Vivienne Michel is the first-person narrator of this novel, which makes this her story, not James Bond's. The novel starts with her on the run from a series of romantic and employment failures. As a stopgap, she takes the job of closing an isolated motel that has gone out of business. When two Mafia-type criminals arrive to burn down the motel so that its owners may collect insurance money, Vivienne is terrified. She is abused by her captives, who, she believes, will first rape and then murder her. When James Bond happens by, having had a flat tire, Vivienne at first thinks he's another killer. However, Bond soon becomes aware of her desperate situation and, of course (after the requisite sexual dalliance), soon rescues her, taking on the criminals, Horror and Sluggsy, in armed combat.
