At the beginning of the story, career criminal James Bolivar diGriz, the Stainless Steel Rat, escapes from the scene of his latest crime, but is later captured and recruited, reluctantly (his reluctance, not theirs), by the Special Corps, an elite team of special police whose job it is to control and prevent intergalactic crime. When his first mission goes wrong and Angelina, a highly dangerous and attractive criminal, escapes, Jim is determined to see the mission through to the end, even if it means abandoning his post and becoming a renegade from the Corps. Catching her is harder than he thought, but handing her over to the Corps is going to be even more difficult, because he has fallen in love with her.

The review of this Book prepared by Jóhanna
In the opening tale of Harry Harrison's legendary Stainless Steel Rat, Slippery Jim diGriz is one of the few remaining criminals in a pacified society. However, the police finally catch up to him and press him into the service of the interplantary police, and he soon finds himself hurling headlong into searching for a powerful but extremely missing spaceship. He manages to escape the service, only to be shot by a woman that he had hoped to save. And well, things get pretty wild for old Slippery Jim from there on out, with him battling captors, insidious political factions that stole the missing spaceship, and finally manages to track down and reconcile with the woman who shot him. Just another day for the Stainless Steel Rat!

The very first Stainless Steel Rat book, this tells the
story of James Bolivar DiGriz, a thief recruited by
the Special Corps to go after a murderer named Angelina
who has stolen a giant battleship. DiGriz's dry-witty first
person commentary makes for a very amusing and action packed
story.

Jim DiGriz, the stainless steel rat, runs for president of a small planet who has been terrorized by a quasi-dictator for decades. This is a softer outting for the rat, who makes a better thief than he does politician, but he brings his whole family along to help cook the electoral process.
