This Girl Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of This Girl

Will is in love with Lake and there will be trouble, he's her high school poetry teacher. Will falls in love with Lake the first time he sees her. She and her family have moved into the house directly across the street. They didn't know they would fall for each other so quickly. One date was all it took. At twenty-one Will has a mountain of responsibility. His little brother Caulder became his responsibility after their parents died two years earlier. Will loves poetry and teaches at the high school. It is sometimes weird being so close in age to his students, but up until now it hasn't been a problem. On their first date his profession never comes up. When Lake says she is eighteen, Will assumes she's a college freshman.

Her little brother Kel and Caulder become best friends.   Will is hoping for the same thing with Lake until she shows up at his school assigned to his poetry class. They kissed on that first date and their feelings for each other can easily cost Will his teaching future.

There is no separating the two though, reason and logic don't always figure into matters of the heart. Lake and Kel are still grieving the loss of their dad. It has only been seven months and being with Will is helping Lake to feel something, which is better than being numb all day.

Her mother Julia likes Will but when she finds out he is Lake's teacher she wants all bets ceased on their relationship. She shares with Will that she is sick, she's dying. The thought of leaving her children alone in the world causes her great pain.

Will resigns from his job, it really is for the best as he can't get Lake out of his heart. Julia asks that they at least wait a year before marrying. They are both so young and Will has the responsibility of his little brother.

Will and Lake perform at open mic slam where they lay out their feelings about death, life, and love weekly driving from Ypsilanti to Detroit to spit their truths. Poetry gives them a way to deal with the grief that continues to be present in their lives. Julia dies and Will is there to help Lake and Kel through. Although Julia was opposed to the relationship and teacher/student scenario she appreciates Will for being there for her daughter and writes him a heart touching note before she passes.

They set their boundaries and prolong sex (it's hard) until their honeymoon. That night it's on, they are both virgins and they turn up the love for three whole nights. Three years later they have a little girl of their own. The boys are family and Will and Lake are very much in love.
Best part of story, including ending: \

Best scene in story: My favorite scene was when Will resigned. There was too much pressure on him.

Opinion about the main character: I liked that Will was able to get a handle on his grief and express his emotions.
