This book is presented as the diary of young Canadian, Susanna Merritt. During the war of 1812, Susanna becomes caught up in Britain's prolonged feud with France as manifested in North America. The War disrupts Susanna's schooling, results in the temporary loss of her best friend, and divides loyalties in her own family. In addition, the war brings Susanna a new friend - the ward of Isaac Brock, the famous British general. This friendship opens the door for Susanna's minor participation in the Battle of Queenston Heights.
