This is a story of romance set in rural northern Louisiana. It follows the lives of two best friends, Jennifer James and Sally Jeffers. Each was an urban teenager whose family moved to White Lightning Road, a country road running between Vienna in Lincoln Parish and Homer in Claiborne Parish, where they became friends. Upon graduation from high school, each escaped back to the big-city life they love. Now a family tragedy has brought Jennifer back to White Lightning Road. Soon she is embroiled in a mystery involving her neighbor Michael Garrott, a man widely believed to be an unpunished murderer. Thus begin the romantic adventures of both Jenny and Sally. Part One follows Jenny as she falls in love with her neighbor, Michael Garrott, who may be an unpunished murderer. Her feelings for him grow stronger despite her suspicions as to his character.
Part Two details Sally's move from Plano, Texas to Atlanta, Georgia for her job. There she meets a younger college student, who pursues him. Everyone warns Sally that he is too young for her...but he is irresistible.
By book's end, both women have solved their dilemmas in a way that leaves the reader satisfied.
