Can anyone please tell me what Son of a Witch is. I absolutly loved Wicked and although some parts are a little confusing when I read it over again its makes sense. I've also seen the musical and it's very different from the book is completly wonderful. And its pefectly fine to discrbe her pubic hair every women has it and its his book he can write whatever he wants in it.

Very briefly, David, thank you for pulling me out of my seat at Revels! Jack Langstaff sang at my wedding last summer ("The Water is Wide") and I still thrill at the exercise of the Revels. I was in it, once--1981, I think--the last year before they started doing post-Christmas performances too. I had the regrettabel voice in the back row. Congratulations for your participation in Portland.
To Josh--sorry about the Philosohy Club. It is a pretty awful scene, but it is meant to be awful. I often point out to young readers that its presence in the book is neither to titillate nor repulse, but to set up the contrast between the solipsistic appetites of other college students while Elphaba is launching herself to approach the Wizard for the first time. By the contrast one sees just how unusual Elphaba is.
Still, since the book wasn't written for 14 year old readers, I can't apologize THAT much; I think the scene has a place and I wouldn't excise it. I'm happy if the rest of the book pleases you.
I can make no assessment about whether SON OF A WITCH will entice you or not. Certainly I hope it does. If there are sections that are boring, disagreeable, or confusing, just remember this: we read, mostly, in order to be taken out of ourselves. If all we really want is what we already know, then there is no reason to read.

I'm fourteen and I read the book and loved it. I skipped over the "Philosphy Club" part but otherwise have read it three times. I think it's amazing book and I really loved the character of Elphaba. I was wondering if Gregory Maguire could tell me what "Son of a Witch" is like--I mean is it okay for a fourteen-year-old? As a side note I'm in tenth grade and am not bothered by too many scenes like those between Elphaba and Fiyero.

Wicked is one of the best books I'be ever read or ever written Gregory Maguire is a genius. I know that the broadway show is a hit success I hope it tours through soon, but i would rather see a movie adapted from it.
Is there any hope of this? Does any studio own the movie rights?
I also cant wait for Son Of A Witch!!!

Gregory Maguire gave the Witch a name, and that name is something much more intrinsic than a label. And how much more interesting is the contrast when Maguire describes her intimately? The sex scenes...we are given this villain and he has the audacity to describe her pubic hair?
And what brilliant audacity it is.

I just stumlbed upon this site. Thank you for your notes! Sorry if the adult nature of my adult stories has taken some aback. One of my hopes is that in couching fantasy in a world in which other stuff "more real" happens--like ambition, sex, politics, etc.--it will make the magic seem more real, too. However I will say if my adult work has given offense, don't look in on the companion volume to WICKED published this fall, to be called SON OF A WITCH.

I completely agree with you. Was it to shock fairytale readers, yes, I think so. It could have been written so much better. Too much sex and induendos for my taste.
