Conrad was a product of his time, as such he could definately be considered a racist. The 'he had plenty of black friends' just doesn't wash away his colonial bias I'm afraid. I think he's a fanatstic storyteller,and I by no means put him in this league, but Hitler also had a Jew at the helm of his propoganda machine...I know plenty of male chauvinist's with female wives.

Although Conrads books contain much about brutality to blacks he himself felt no spite towards them. He had many black friends

Hi, I'm busy with an essay on whether Conrad is "a bloody racist" as Achebe calls him. I think not, but having trouble with the essay. Some1 pleeeez help. Youssef? Pleez.
