Ladies' man Joe Brady and shy, bookish Clarence Doolittle are sailors on a 4-day shore leave in Los Angeles. Joe has a hot date waiting, but can't get rid of Clarence, who is looking to him for help in meeting girls. Joe promises to set Clarence up with somebody, but the two of them are pulled in by police to help with a young runaway boy, Donald Martin, who wants to join the Navy. Joe and Clarence get Donald home to his Aunt Susie, an MGM extra.

To set the tongue-tied Clarence up with Susie, who is an aspiring singer, Joe claims that Clarence can get her an audition with renowned pianist and maestro, José Iturbi. The two sailors spend the rest of the movie trying to find Iturbi and get him to meet Susie, but in the process, Joe falls in love with Susie himself while Clarence meets a waitress from his home city, Brooklyn, and immediately hits it off with her. When Joe and Clarence fess up to each other about how they feel, the only problem is getting Susie the audition, but their leave runs out and Susie accidentally learns her meeting with Iturbi is a big lie. The only one that can save the day for Joe is Jose Iturbi himself...and it may take the entire US Navy to get him!
This film is the one that has Jose Iturbi performing with 18 (19?) other pianists on the Hollywood Bowl stage with full-sized grand pianos. It's also the one that has the famous dance sequence with Gene Kelly and Jerry the Mouse. Plenty of Kelly's fancy footwork and fine singing from Kelly, Sinatra and Grayson.
