When an encyclopedia scholar finds his entry on slang is outdated, he goes out into the real world to find out more about modern life. After seeing singer Sugarpuss O'Shea in a nightclub act and meeting her backstage, she is confronted by her mobster boyfriend who needs to hide from the law. Deciding to hide for her safety, she calls on the professor and his seven colleagues and insists on staying with them. Eventually falling for the bumbling intellectual, she reconsiders her relationship with such a criminal.
