In a holiday resort in Atlantic City two young girls meet and become instant friends. It is the beginning of a lifetime friendship. The two attend college together and then go in opposite directions but keep in touch through letters and phone calls. Fast talking Cecilia "CC" Carol Bloom (Midler) grows up to be a New York theater performer and singer, while the rich kid from San Francisco, Hillary Whitney Essex (Hershey) marries and grows up to be a debutante and a lawyer. After a number of years living on separate coasts, Hillary and her husband Michael (Read) move to New York City and it is there that she gives birth to her daughter, Victoria Cecilia (Johnston). The movie shows various stages of the women's friendship including the time in college when they both fell for the same man, John Pierce (Heard). CC is there for her friend Hillary when she discovers that her husband is having an affair and later, she rushes to her side when Hillary collapses and is diagnosed with terminal cancer. The friendship becomes even stronger and is helped along by Hillary's daughter and CC's namesake, Victoria.
