This German film details the tensions which can develop between family members when one or more of them is physically different. Lara is a bright, personable child who acts as the liaison between her parents, who are deaf mutes and communicate solely via sign language, and the rest of the world. Her parents even take her out of school to accompany them to the bank, so that she can communicate their wishes to the loan officer.

One Christmas, Lara's aunt gives her niece a clarinet, and Lara embraces the world of music. Of course, it's difficult for the child's parents to share their daughter's passion, and this causes rifts in the family.
Fast forward ten years. Having graduated from high school, Lara is wrestling with whether or not to audition for a prestigious music academy in Berlin, hundreds of miles away from home. A romantic relationship with a teacher of deaf children helps Lara come to a decision as to whether to strike out on her own or remain with her increasingly dependent parents.
