Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Downhill Racer

David Chappellet (Redford), a rebellious and hardheaded skier, is trying out for the US Ski Team. His selfish behavior makes it difficult for his coach, Eugene Claire (Hackman), to select him for the squad. Because of his tremendous talent the coach relents and trains him with the rest of the team. His return home to Idaho Springs, CO to tell his emotionless father (Stroud) of his plan is met with little enthusiasm. Chappellet's goals are selfishly pursued at the expense of the rest of the team, but seem to be understood by his teammate Mayo (Coleman) as they train for the upcoming Winter Olympic competition.

Leaving his girlfriend behind, in Europe he takes up with a more refined woman named Carole (Sparv). He stays focused on skiing showing little interest in anything but himself. Under the mounting pressure, Coach Claire is even more at odds with Chappellet, wanting him to succeed for the team but not for his own glory. The Olympics begin and the downhill competition is held. Chappellet takes the lead with the fastest time in the Men's Downhill race. As everyone is watching to see if his time will hold up, the final competitor wipes out near the finish line leaving him the gold medal winner. He is carried off to celebrate with his teammates and fans.
