Meryl Streep plays Rachel Ephron, a food writer for a successful New York Magazine. Jack Nicholson is Mark, a Washington Columnist. They meet at a wedding, fall in love and soon thereafter get married, despite Rachel's reservations about marriage. Together, they buy a house and have a daughter. But when Rachel is pregnant with their second child, she discovers that her husband has been having an affair with one of the members of their inner circle. She wants to keep the marriage together and asks him to terminate the affair, which he claims he does. However, she discovers later that, when she was in delivery, he was out buying his lover an expensive necklace. She leaves him; he pursues her.
