Maggie Peyton is a very good ex-street racer who gave up street racing because of an accident. She promised her dad she would never race again. Then, she found Herbie at the dump. Herbie is a car with a mind of its own. He drives for her and does not obey her so she decides to drop him back at the dump and find a new car. She is on her way to drop him off back at the dump when he takes her to a car show. At the show, she somehow gets challenged to race a Nascar professional. Herbie, who is not one to back down to a challenge, accepts and decides that they are going to race whether Maggie wants to or not. They end up winning the race and are happy at first, but then her dad finds out. He is very mad because she broke her promise, so she lies to him saying she was just riding in the car and that “Max” as driving. This seems to work until the professional racer challenges her to a rematch… and the winner gets $10,000. Maggie wants the money, but if she races, her dad will find out that she was lying.

Maggie Peyton (Lohan) is a member of a third generation racing family famous for never winning a race.
She hopes to become a NASCAR legend, but her father Ray Peyton Sr. (Keaton) thinks women and car racing should not mix.
Maggie receives a Volkswagon Bug (Herbie) as a college graduation present from her dad, and her best friends helps her restore the car.
Taking over all of Maggie's driving, she beats all-everything racer Trip Murphy (Dillon) at a car show.
Disgusted by his loss, Murphy tires to find the secret behind Herbie while Maggie enters the Daytona 500.
