The psychiatrists urge the De Tartas family not to tell the truth to Paul who could suffer from a terrible crisis if he discovers what has happened to him too abruptly. So, the family mansion is decorated in the style of the Paris of 1905 and everybody has to play a role destined to fool Paul Fournier.
