Lilli (Judy Davis) is a back-up singer for an Elvis impersonator, until she's fired while on tour in a backwater town. With her car on the fritz, Lilli finds she has to hang around until a replacement part can arrive from the big city. She finds shelter in a nearby trailer park, where she's befriended by a young girl named Ally.
Lilli doesn't realize it at first, but Ally is the daughter she hasn't seen since she was a baby. It's only when she runs into her former mother-in-law, Bet, who has been raising the girl, that Lilli understands who Ally is. Lilli must then decide whether to explain to her daughter why she's been absent from her life. She must also figure out whether she will take custody of her daughter, despite Bet's fierce determination to keep Ally with her.
