Terry Wolfmeyer (Joan Allen) is left to raise her four daughters when her husband Grey disappears with his Swedish secretary. Terry spends her time drinking and dealing with her bitterness and anger. When Denny Davies (Kevin Costner), a former pro baseball player, starts hanging around the house to keep her company the two strike up an unlikely romance. Terry is dealing with four daughters who have conflicting feelings about their mother. The oldest, Hadley (Alicia Witt) is graduating from college and stuns her mother when she announces that she is pregnant and getting married. Emily (Keri Russell)fights with Terry over her desire to attend an arts college and pursue dance. Andy (Erika Christensen) angers her mother when she announces that she's getting a 9 to 5 job rather than attend college. Youngest daughter Popeye (Evan Rachel Wood) is 15 and navigating her way through high school and falling for a gay friend. When Emily falls ill Terry is forced to face the prospect of life without one of her precious daughters. As Terry resolves to stop drinking and strengthen her relationships with Denny and the girls she is dealt a horrible blow.
