Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Rod Tidwell, a star wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, and Tom Cruise is his agent. Maguire gets involved in several furious endorsement negotiations for Tidwell, but he manages to walk away a winner. Gooding shines in his best role yet, and the phrase "Show me the money!" has now become a very well-known catchphrase.

Jerry Maguire (Cruise) is a high-powered sports agent working for a big agency when he wakes up one morning and recognizes how empty his life is. He drafts an ambitious "mission/morality statement" which he distributes to the entire firm, and though his coworkers are impressed, he's suddenly out of a job. Not really sure what he's doing, but with the emotional support of sweet female coworker Dorothy (Zellweger) and a promising football player who decides stay with him as a client, Maguire goes it alone. The role is tailor made for Cruise, although Cuba Gooding Jr. matches him with enthusiastic, bursting energy that made "Show me the money!" a national catch phrase and won him an Oscar for best performance by an actor in a supporting role. Lots of real sportscasters and athletes have cameos, from Frank Gifford to Troy Aikman. Basically, writer-director Cameron Crowe put together a winning combination of guy story and chick flick to make a strong 1996 feel-good movie.
