Frédérique, a wealthy member of the bourgeoisie of the French Riviera, brings back home the young artist named "Why" she's encountered in Paris. Both women, bisexual, enjoy the slightly decadent life of Saint-Tropez.

When Why spends the night with the architect Jean-Louis Trintignant, Frédérique decides at first to seduce him for fun but she falls in love with him. Why, for whom Trintignant was her first sexual experience with a man, withdraws into herself.
