Neeson plays Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who attempts to build a respectable life for himself, but is pursued relentlessly by Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush). Valjean falls in love with Fantine – a working-class woman forced to become a prostitute – and when she dies he takes care of her daughter, Cosette. When she grows older, Cosette will fall in love with a poor political activist, and Valjean will have a final confrontation with Javert.
