In this unconventional and moody film, Izzy, a well-known jazz saxophonist, is shot while playing in a New York cafe. His injury ends his musical career, and Izzy sinks into depression. However, his life changes when he comes across a blue rock with a phone number attached to it. Izzy returns the stone to its ostensible owner, an aspiring actress named Celia, who happens to be listening to one of his jazz recordings when he arrives at her place to drop it off. Soon the two begin an affair, and their attraction for one another may be tied to the stone, which both glows and levitates. Unfortunately, trouble rears its head when it becomes obvious that others, including a mysterious anthropologist who knows a lot about Izzy's past, want to gain possession of the rock.
