MIRACLE is based on the true events surrounding the 1980 United States Olympic hockey team, from the appointment of Herb Brooks (Russell) as coach to winning the gold medal against the seemingly invincible Soviet Union team. Through a series of jump cuts and news cliips, the film sets up the mood in the nation -- memories of Vietnam and Watergate lingered, gas rationing was a constant, and Jimmy Carter was trying his best to rally the nation to greatness. What it took was a group of college hockey players determined to give their very best on the Olympic rink and Brooks to push them past their limits. They are followed through training and matches against opposing teams with a few off-ice moments including Brooks coping with life at home and a team Christmas party.
The title of the film is taken from the now-legendary ABC broadcast in which announcer Al Michaels posed the question "Do you believe in miracles?" This also gave the the event its nickname -- the "Miracle on Ice."
