After years of enduring bad luck with blind dates, beautiful Charlotte Cantilini (Lopez) has finally met the man of her dreams, Dr. Kevin Fields (Vartan).

There is only one problem, Kevin's mother, Viola Fields (Fonda), recently fired from her job as a news anchor, does not agree with his choice.
Worried she will lose her son's affections as she has her career, Viola decides to make life miserable for the happy couple by becoming the worst mother-in-law possible.
With help from her long-time assistant, Viola almost gets Charlotte to split. But Charlotte finally decides to fight back, and the two square off until somebody concedes.
