Los Angeles commercial director Max Carlyle (Snipes)goes to New York City on business and while he's there he visits his artist friend Charlie (Downey Jr.) who has recently been diagnosed with AIDS. While in NY he meets Karen (Kinski) and they are immediately attracted to one another. Later that day, after missing his plane, Max meets up with Karen at a concert and they spend an enjoyable evening together which leads to a night of passion. Upon his return to LA, Max finds himself experiencing problems with his wife Mimi (Ming-Na)and feeling a sense of dissatifaction with his job. A year later Max returns to New York again to see Charlie who is now dying. Max meets Karen once again and to his shock discovers that she is married to Charlie's brother Vernon (MacLachlan). Despite the circumstances, the sparks fly between them once again only this time around their spouses find themselves drawn to each other.
