Meanwhile Verne the turtle wakes up from hibernation on the first day of spring with his "family" of assorted woodland creatures including a family of porcupines, a opossum obsessed with playing dead and his teenage daughter, a hyperactive squirrel and an assertive female skunk with self esteem issues. The family is shocked to encounter a gigantic hedge that surrounds what is left of their woodland home after the area has been turned into a massive suburban neighborhood. RJ stumbles upon the naive family and realizes that enlisting their help may give him the chance to make Vincent's deadline. RJ shows them the ropes of stealing food from the humans. The family welcomes RJ into their circle, making him feel guilty about deceiving them, while Verne is jealous at being ousted from his former position of family leader. Horrified at the thought of animals daring to invade her perfect suburban world, the homeowner's association president calls in a high-tech exterminator, making food gathering difficult.
When Verne attempts to return the food, RJ comes up with a desperate plan to steal back all the food in one night. When the plan going awry, the animals are trapped between Vincent, the exterminator and an irate homeowner's association president.
