Chris Cahill (Hemingway) is a young, up-and-coming distance runner while Tory Skinner (Donnelly) is a veteran looking for one more big win. They become friends and lovers as well as competitors on the track, under the aggressive coaching of Terry Tingloff (Glenn), both hoping to earn berths on the 1980 Olympic team. Former pentathlete Donnelly is notable in this role but only made one other film; distance runner Kenny Moore appears in a supporting role, as does Frank Shorter playing a TV announcer. Robert Towne, one of the greatest screenwriters of all time, wrote and directed this pleasant but somewhat bland 1982 film.
