This was the first of two late-90s films about the feisty young distance runner from Coos Bay, Oregon who set 6 American records and might have been a world champion had he not died in a car accident at 24. "Prefontaine" was made by the makers of the excellent actual documentary "Hoop Dreams." It has a cheap, documentary style or TV-biopic look about it; actors speak directly to the camera as if they were real people reminiscing about the man. Jared Leto looks very convincing, especially shown alongside real footage of the real Pre on the track. The athlete's parents contributed to this version, and there is actual footage of Pre as a little boy in it.
