Software designer Allie Jones (Fonda) has just left her boyfriend Sam (Weber) because he had a sleepover with his ex-wife. She finds a classy upper West Side apartment and advertises for a Single White Female like herself to be a roommate. All the prospectives seem weird until Hedy Carlson (Leigh) shows up and appears level-headed though rather plain looking (and toting a secret past). Things go fine until Allie gets back together with Sam and asks Hedy to move out, whereupon Hedy turns jealous, possessive, and resentful. She also starts acting very strange, adopting Allie's clothes and short orange hairstyle, then aggressively seducing Sam and finally killing people. A bit silly and predictable, and suffused with quite a bit of crude violence and sex leading up to a cliched horror movie climax, this stylish 1992 thriller is nevertheless buoyed by excellent performances by the two female leads.
