The year is 1799, and constable Ichabod Crane (Depp) is determined to solve crimes and mysteries by the latest scientific methods. He is sent from New York City to the small upstate town of Sleepy Hollow, where several decapitated bodies have turned up in the nearby forest. Among the folks who meet him there are Baltus Van Tassel, the richest of the local burghers (Gambon), and more interestingly, his blonde daughter Katrina Anne Van Tassel (Ricci). Townsfolk are convinced a headless horseman, the spirit of a Hessian soldier, is responsible for the bodies, which total 18 by story's end, but Crane is determined to prove otherwise. Washington Irving's famous short story has been considerably altered by this 1999 Tim Burton film, which owes more for its look and sound to the old 1950s and 1960s horror movies by Hammer Films; two veterans of those cheesy classics, Christopher Lee and Michael Gough, have cameos here, but this is mainly a showcase for mood and goofy special effects.

In the town of Sleepy Hollow people are stalked by a killer known as the Headless Horseman. The Headless Horsemen used to be a soldier and was decapitated in battle. From then on he cuts off people's heads and collects them. A detective comes to the town and begins to investigate and unravel the true intentions of this killer.

The well-known story with a twist. Constible Ichabod Crane (Depp) is sent to the little town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate some murders. It seems that the victem's heads were lobbed off. The town believes it's the work of a Headless Horseman (Park). The horseman was once a Hessien (Walken) who was killed in the western woods. Ichabod doesn't beleave it at first, but he sees the Horseman (and promtly faints). He concludes that someone must be controlling the Horseman and unravalles a web of conspericy that points to the Van Tassels. Ichabod has fallen in love with Katrina Van Tassel (Ricci) and is hartbroken when his findings point to her father, Baltus (Gambon). However, seeing is not always believing, and someone else is behind the Horseman. An excellent Tim Burton movie!

Sleepy Hollow relives the old tale of the headless horseman. Naturally there is the cliched elements, a woman bent on revenge, an investigator with unfinished business in his childhood, a small town full of secrets, gossip and scandal and of course the headless horseman. A romantic plot subtle throughout the movie, incredible graphics and a brilliant cast. A must see for Tim Burton fans.
