A jaded gangster and his men are sent away on a supposedly peaceful mission to negotiate a settlement between two rival Yakuza clans. When things go terribly awry they hide out on a beach, suspecting they have been betrayed. The humanity of the gangsters is revealed as they play on the beach, creating a striking contrast to the swift and brutal violence that permeates this beautiful and tragic story.

SONATINE is a movie written and directed by Takeshi Kitano in 1993.
Takeshi Kitano is an aging yakuza tired of his criminal activity. He is sent by his boss in Okinawa in order to help settle a gang conflict. Several of his men die and Kitano must retreat in a cabin near the sea and wait there for days with several of his men. He helps a young woman after she was assaulted and falls for her. Soon the criminals, unaware of what's going on in Okinawa nor Tokyo, enjoy their forced holidays and begin to play like children on the beach.
