Top of the list of his bashers is the top senator running against him, who uses the woman's former protesting years against her and the president. Will their relationship stand up to the pressure? Can Sydney ignore the fact that he is an important man and just enjoy his company? Will the senator use the president's romance against him and win the presidency for himself?

Michael Douglas plays a liberal American President who has a romance with the very butch Annette Bening (she cut off her hair for the part). But the evil right wingers attack the President for having a butch girlfriend, and he finds it hard to push his liberal agenda while sleeping with her at the same time.
