This crime caper is unusual in that it's all about what happens after a crime is committed. Charlie, a mob attorney, and his friend Vic, who owns a strip joint, easily steal more than $2 million from Charlie's boss. However, getting out of town with the money proves to be more difficult. The two men don't want to hit the road right away because it would look incriminating. Also, there's an ice storm raging. Thus, they decide to hang around for a while. They pass the time by hiding from mobsters and visiting friends and family. They also make repeated trips to Vic's club and a local bar, where they schmooze with other locals, drink almost nonstop, and watch the body count rise as greedy hoods come after them.

In Wichita Falls, Kansas, corrupt young attorney Charlie Arglist (Cusack), who regularly does chores for the local crime boss, Bill Guerrard (Quaid), has gone in on a plan with tough guy Vic Cavanaugh (Thornton) to skim $2 million off Guerrard's profits. The pair merely have to wait through the night before taking it on the lam early in the morning.
Meanwhile Charlie has to deal with his drunken friend Pete Van Heuten (Platt), another attorney who is married to Charlie's ice queen ex; gorgeous Renata (Nielsen), a stripper whom Charlie would like to go away with him; a killer who seems to know what Charlie and Vic have done and is hunting them down; and his own doubts about Vic's loyalty to their plan. This 2005 film was directed by longtime comedy filmmaker Harold Ramis.
