Mika the polar bear has just become a father; his cub is named Lars. Robby is a young and playful seal pup. Both Lars and Robby live on the artic ice far to the north. The two young animals are supposed to be natural enemies according to young bear cub Greta, but they wind up best friends. While the two friends frolic, Nina a young Eskimo girl fishing on her boat with her dog watches with great curiosity. She tells her grandmother of the strange playful pair, but her clairvoyant grandmother already knows her tale. Three surly members of Lars bear clan are ready to hunt down Robby's family until the friends thwart the attack. Angered by their interference the bears chase both to an ice cave and then onto a marooned old schooner. The bears are chased off by a group of lemmings in slapstick fashion. The bears complain to Sophocles, the wise old walrus with a broken tusk, who acts as leader of the arctic animals. The two friends are warned to stay away from one another. A penguin named Caruso livens things up with his arrival before Lars proposes a solution to the animosity between the bears and seals.

While playing together Mika and Lars become separated; Lars is adrift on an ice floe heading south. During a violent thunderstorm, he narrowly misses being hit by a ship but manages to climb into a metal barrel once his iceberg has melted away. Afloat in the tropics he befriends a hippo named Henry. Henry teaches Lars to swim and then sets him on his journey home by sending him off with Marcus the eagle. Marcus flies the young bear to a killer whale named Samson, and it is Samson who swims him home. Along the way they pass a sinister metal barge that is swallowing fish in its mechanical steel jaws. Lars is reunited with his friends but the happiness is short lived; the fish are disappearing due to the giant black ship. Lars and Robby venture to the human settlement to scavenge for fish. Lars in hiding is discovered by Nina just before the villagers take part in a ceremony to determine what has happened to the fish. The monster ship swallows several bears and Robby's seal family leaving Lars to try to affect a rescue. He puts his life in jeopardy to save the animals and his best friend at the same time ridding the artic of the evil machine that is threatening the lives of all the arctic residents.
