This film is very French: it's long, with lots of talking and sex, but very little other action. Jean-Pierre Leaud plays Alexandre, a charming, good-for-nothing, unemployed young man who lives with Marie, his sometime lover. Like a mother, she takes care of him, but becomes angry when he takes up with Veronika, a promiscuous young nurse. The film explores this psychologically-fraught love triangle and, in the end, pursues it to its Freudian extreme.
