Joseph Pulitzer and William Defoe Hearst raise the distribution price of newspapers one-tenth of a cent per paper. The newsboys, also known as newsies, were poor enough already and most were orphaned. When they heard that they would have to pay more to make money to live, they were outraged. Jack "Coyboy" Kelly (Christian Bale), inspired by the trolley worker's strike, organizes a newsboys' strike.

He meets a new member of the newsies, David Jacobs (David Mosscow) and they quickly become friends. At the start of the strike, they meet a writer for the newspaper, who truely believes in them and becomes one of their few allies, writing stories to try and get people to hear what they have to say. As Jack leads the strike, using David as the brains and himself as the voice, the weak and oppressed children find the strength to come together and challenge the powerful.
