David and Dana Hurst are a married couple who run a successful dental practice. From the outside, their home life seems to be pretty strong as well - they've been married ten years and they have three young daughters. But one night, at an amateur opera production where Dana is performing as a chorus girl, David glimpses her getting kissed on the cheek by another man. He can't actually see the man's face, but he does see Dana look into the stranger's eyes with happiness and desire. From that moment on, David has no peace.

He doesn't try to find out who the mysterious man might be or whether there is any full-blown affair at all. Sometimes he tells himself that there's nothing going on, while at other times he lets himself imagine that his wife is sleeping around. All the while, the gulf growing between David and Dana becomes more apparent, though whether this divide exists because of Dana's supposed infidelities or David's insecurities remains unclear. At the end, both have to decide whether it's worth staying together for the sake of the family.
