Sutter Keely is a high school senior who lives in the present with no long-term plans whatsoever. He stays perpetually in a state of quasi-drunk, pays no attention to school, and prides himself on being the life of the party. One night, he wakes up in the front lawn of Aimee Finecky, who helps him get home; in exchange, he offers to help her with her early-morning newspaper route and have lunch with her. Sutter denies to his friend that Aimee is anything worth noting. Aimee starts tutoring Sutter in geometry, and he finds himself oddly drawn to her. He invites her to a party, but at the party, he spends his time trying to talk to his ex-girlfriend Cassidy. When he finds out Cassidy is dating someone new, he gets drunk and offers some whiskey to Aimee as well. They share their first kiss, and he invites her to the prom with him. When Sutter realizes that Cassidy will never come back, that she's looking for a man with his eyes on the future, he commits fully to Aimee, and they fall in love. They get physically intimate for the first time, they have a great time at prom, and things are going well. However, when Aimee gets into college in Philadelphia, and she invites Sutter to come live with her up north, Sutter begins to freak out; his emotional state becomes even more unraveled when he encounters his absentee dad and sees what he may be destined to become.
