Jack Dobson (Belushi) and his partner Steve Frayn (Goldwyn) are Palm Beach detectives who are investigating a case of multiple murders, all involving women who can be linked to Jack in some way- one was an old girlfriend, another a one-night stand and another a waitress who worked at a bar he often frequented. They have no leads but numerous suspects. The killer taunts the police with anonymous letters about where he will strike again. Suspicion is cast on Steve when it is discovered that he had an affair with Jack's ex, Ellen Schofield (Bracco) shortly before she turned up dead. Steve swears to his partner that he did not kill her and suddenly the investigation shifts in another direction and Jack is at the center of suspicion. When he gets shot by Steve, everyone except his fellow cops believe Jack is dead and that he was the real murderer. He is not, it is just a clever set up engineered by the partners to catch the real killer, Jack's brother Michael (Russ). The plan works brilliantly.
