United States of Leland, directed by Matthew Ryan Hoge, is about a 15-year-old boy, Leland P. Fitzgerald (Ryan Gosling), who has done a seemingly senseless and cruel murder. This murder of a mentally retarded boy shocks the community and terribly affect's the boy's family as well as his own. He is arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center.

An aspiring writer and prison teacher, Pearl Madison (Don Cheadle) is intrigued by Leland's quiet profound nature. He delves into Leland's thoughts and discovers a chance for a career-making story, but later becoming Leland's friend. Pearl tries to help and understand Leland but doesn't seem to be getting anywhere as Leland discloses his sad vision of the world around him.
