It's the 1970s and The Georgia State Penitentiary has yet to be integrated. The federal government mandates changes in the housing. Inmates Harold Morris (Jenkins), a poor white Southerner serving two life sentences, and Doc (Black), a black inamte, are the unwilling first inmates of different races to share a cell. The prison is administered by Warden Kelso (Keach) who is forced to integrate the facility. Morgan Fairhcild plays is the sassy prison nurse. As expected, the two main characters by being forced together are forced to change their opinion, especially as it applies to racial matters, and find they have more in common than they initially thought.
